It doesn’t work like it’s supposed to

“I just think you’re lucky, is all. I mean, we’re not in a position to be choosy is all I’m saying.”

Marv checked his watch again. He wanted this dead body out of his Nitro. And to not be having this conversation with Dell.

“Dude, I so don’t want to be having this conversation with you,” he said.

“Okay, that’s cool,” Dell said. “But you do realize she accepts the whole eye thing, right? And she’s fine. Where else you gonna find that?”

“What time is it?” Marv huffed, drumming his fingers on the door.

“Almost eight.”

“What’s with this guy?” I’m tired of being on corpse corral duty for him. It takes all day and the next to get out the formaldehyde stink. What the hell does he even do with them in there?”

“I don’t know. But the Master told us to bring ‘em, so we bring ‘em.”

“Yeah. But I don’t hafta like it.”

“Hey, careful with that kinda talk if you wanna get Naked.”

Marv wasn’t so sure he wanted that anymore. Over the last few weeks it had begun to lose its appeal to him.

“It’s eight. Let’s go.”

The two men exited the SUV and circled to the rear. Marv popped the hatch and there it was, wrapped in two garbage bags.

“We shouldn’t be doing this in the daylight,” Marv said, grabbing it by the shoulders. Dell grabbed the feet and they slid it out.

“Forget the hatch,” Marv said. “Let’s just get this done. I’m outta Febreeze so let it air out.”

“I bet he’s probably some kind of necro-freak,” Dell said. “This guy’s small,” he said, referring to the body. “Why’s he so heavy?”

“Formaldehyde. The body is saturated with the stuff and it makes it heavier. Either that or we’re just tired.”

They’d been out since a little after one o’clock this morning at Gethsemane Cemetery to get this body. Graveyards were creepy and not always because of the dearly departed. They’d tried to be nonchalant and walked around outside the gates but there was some dude in there. Eventually he disappeared, but they never saw him come out.

Even in Detroit, walking around with a dead body wrapped in garbage bags and shovels at three in the morning gets noticed. To add to the risk they always had to backfill the grave in case they were sent back to steal another body at another time.

“I’ll tell you what,” Marv said. “This better be the last time I have to do this. They stopped at the door to the building and Dell propped it open with his elbow, giving it a hard shove so they could hurry inside.

The two of them had done this enough times that they knew where to go. This place had been an elementary school or something but it was empty now except for this Hills guy and his big-titted secretary.

“Hey, maybe I could ask his assistant out on a date,” Dell said. “She deals with us enough. Maybe the whole eye thing doesn’t freak her out.”

“She’s like fifteen years older than you.
